Cows have the potential to produce large amounts of milk, but they require a high intake of nutrients to reach that potential. They need a daily supply of essential nutrients for maintenance, growth, pregnancy, and milk production. While any nutrient can limit performance, energy and protein are the most likely to be deficient, particularly in high and average-yielding cows, to support their normal body functions, which is known as their “maintenance” requirement.
